Angels in Action: Portland

March 9, 2008

A week from this Monday I was browsing the job postings on craigslist and I ran across one titled: Photographer Needed: Cirque du Soleil Angel Action. An hour later I had a job working with a theater group, Theater MAMA, that promotes Cirque du Soleil. The Director, Michelin told me he had received a ton of responses from really talented photographers so he asked me to recommend some photographers to make it easier on him. Turns out the person I’m about to recommend, Ben Klusman, sends me an email recommending me for the job. Good to know the photographers you think highly of think highly of you as well. But then that’s the portland Photography community for you, all great people. The job entailed two 15-hour days of angels promoting Cirque du Soleil: Corteo throughout Portland. My job was to photograph them. Along with getting paid we all got a free ticket to go see the show on Friday. The show was amazing. Amazing doesn’t really do it justice actually. To me, the acts they do are more impressive than Jesus waking on water or Moses parting the red sea because the things these performers do, they do with only their mortal human bodies. They do not have the advantage of God snapping his fingers and instantly giving someone power.  Saturday and Tuesday I photographed the angels promoting. I met some pretty amazing people during these two days which made the whole experience pretty enjoyable. I signed an autograph to a guy about my age because I think he thought I was part of the show (he didn’t ask though so I didn’t feel like spoiling his excitment). Our angels got to ride on a fire truck, have dance parties in front of bars, hold up traffic, and many other pretty humorous things. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves though.  As always go to my flickr for all of the photos.
