Businessman photos

February 12, 2009

I’m headed to Boston and NYC a week from today to visit my younger brother and to shoot headshots. If you’re in Boston or NYC area and are needing new headshots get in touch with me and we’ll set up a shoot. I’ll be in Boston the night of February 19th through the 24th and then in NYC the 24th through the 1st of March. Sessions start at $475. More details about rates here.

Below are stock photos I shot with my roommate Mike yesterday. The photos of me (purple tie) were taken by Mike with the lighting and post processing done by me. The photos were taken on the Eastbank Esplanade of the Willametter River in Portland.

I took the below photos with my recently made DIY beauty dish (with the exception of the first, non-beanie, photo which I used a 28″ softbox)

DIY Beauty Dish

February 8, 2009

For awhile now I’ve been checking out all the DIY projects that show up on the Strobist blog. Tom Seibert’s DIY beauty dish caught my eye so I decided I’d have a go at it. I followed his tutorial on his blog and added a few modifications to mine (some that I got from Jon Haverstick’s blog. It ended up costing me $42 to make. The most expensive piece of making it was the bowl which I found for $20 at Cost Plus World Market. Beauty dishes on the market average between $120 to $300 (with some a lot more). I’m excited to test it out on my shoots this week.

Edit: Photos shot with this beauty dish can be found here.

Update (9/13/09): To attach the L-bracket to a light stand you’ll need a Swivel Umbrella Adapter. The specific pieces that connects the L-bracket are the Reversible studs which screw together with the L-bracket in between. I had to make the holes in the L-bracket bigger to fit the studs. I would buy dedicated studs that stay on the L-bracket (and even glue them to it) as they are a pain to take on and off. You’ll also need to buy a hot-shoe to connect to the studs.

Also MJP brought to my attention that instead of using a plastic gutter downspout connector you can buy the Interfit flex mount. It’s a little more expensive but it looks like it fits much better. I just bought one and will let everyone know how it works when it comes in the mail.

On Thursday I did a shoot with Jacob. Jacob recently returned to Portland after touring and recording with his signed band he used to be in, Upon Beauty Rests. He’s currently looking to get into more modeling.

Tech. Info:

I always forget to take photos of my lighting setup and kick myself afterwards for it. So for this shoot I made sure that I took photos of my setups. I remembered for all of them except the first one. As you can see below I used the westcott 28″ softbox with my Canon 580ex speedlight inside. The lighting stand is made by Avenger  and is a great stand. I remotely triggered the flash with my cybersyncs made by Alienbees. Cybersyncs are a good inexpensive alternative to the PocketWizards.

For the setup below I raised my light stand as high as it could go and put a grid-spot by Honl photo on the front of my speedlight.

February 5, 2009

I did a short shoot with my roommate Mike the other day. Did some shots for stock and then played around a bit with a grid spot on my speed-light.

Model: Ivy

February 1, 2009

I’ve been kind of on a hiatus from shooting models over the last few months and I’ve been really missing it. So I’m plunging back in and going to start shooting a lot more in the coming weeks. The photos below are from my shoot yesterday with Ivy.
